We've added locations of pre-1928 Chicago synagogues to ChicagoAncestors. The mapping is based on Chicago city directory listings supplemented with information from secondary sources, Chicago newspapers and congregational websites. In some cases, entries on specific congregations include brief histories and bibliographic citations, while others simply indicate the year the location was listed in the city directory.
To view the synagogue entries, researcher have several options. First, searching on any intersection or address from the main page will find synagogues near that location. Second, users can select the "browse" option, click on "collection' and choose "Synagogue Collection" from the drop-down menu. Third, researchers can search on a synagogue name (or part of a name) by selecting the "search" tab on the main menu, and then using the keyword search option.
We encourage researchers who find errors or have supplementary information about a particular congregation to register and use the "comment" feature to append their information.
